Summary
ARB1 encodes an ATPase from the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) superfamily that is involved in ribosome biogenesis. Arb1p appears to be required for several steps in the biogenesis of both 40S and 60S ribosomal subunits, including the processing of 18S and 25S rRNA precursors in the nucleus, and the nuclear export of pre-40S and pre-60S particles. Consistent with its role in ribosome maturation, Arb1p shuttles between nucleus and cytoplasm. Also consistently, ARB1 is among the targets of Sfp1p transcription factor that regulates expression of ribosomal protein and biogenesis genes. It is proposed that the ATP-hydrolyzing activity of Arb1p provides a mechanochemical force required at multiple steps of ribosome biogenesis. Yet the exact mechanisms of Arb1p actions remain to be discovered, as do pathways that regulate its activity.
