Abstract


THE yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae produces pheromones which seem to participate in the mating process1,2. Each of the two haploid mating types (a or alpha) produces a diffusible factor (called a factor or alpha factor, respectively) which causes cells of the opposite mating type to be retarded in the G1 period of the cell division cycle3−6. The pheromones thus act to synchronise the cell cycles of mating cells before the formation of the diploid zygote. By a variation of the original assay for yeast mating pheromones8,9, we have observed that cells of mating type a produce a new pheromone which inhibits action of the alpha factor.
