The criteria used to predict ORFs in S. paradoxus, S. mikatae and S. bayanus included a requirement for a start methionine (ATG) followed by an uninterrupted reading frame encoding at least 49 amino acids (ie the first or only exon is at least 150 nucleotides).

There are many known S. cerevisiae ORFs that would not meet this requirement. As a consequence, any S. cerevisiae ORF with a first (or only) exon smaller than 150 nucleotides was identified as an ORF of "no similarity" simply because the set of predicted S. paradoxus, S. mikatae and S. bayanus ORFs did not include potential orthologs for these unusually small proteins.

The following table lists 59 S. cerevisiae ORFs that were excluded from the "Budding Yeasts Genome Comparison" due to their small size. Orthology could not be predicted for these ORFs.
