Yeast Information in the Post-Genomic Era

D. Botstein, C. Adler, C. Ball, J.M. Cherry, S. Chervitz, B. Dunn, S. Dwight, G. Juvik, R. Schmidt, P. Spellman, and S. Weng. Department of Genetics, Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, California 94305-5120. (e-mail: yeast-curator@genome.stanford.edu)

Thanks to the international sequencing collaboration, all the yeast genes are now known, in the limited sense that we have their nucleotide and/or amino acid sequences. The yeast biology community now thereby enters the post-genome era, where the generation, retrieval and use of genomic and functional information will necessarily undergo qualitative changes. As we enter this era, the yeast community is presented with a number of opportunities and challenges. SGD plans to find any and all knowledge associated with a particular sequence and to provide curation of the relevant literature to both the yeast and non-yeast researchers. The continuing addition of new literature on a gene can be automated if (and only if) yeast authors mention at a minimum Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and include proper gene names in their abstracts. These issues and plans for new SGD content and services in the future will be discussed.
