Abstract: In this issue of Chemistry & Biology, Zhang and colleagues developed a yeast cell surface display strategy to effectively evolve the substrate specificity of DhbE, one of the adenylation domains of the bacillibactin synthetase complex. The method yields DbhE variants that have dramatically altered substrate specifities toward unnatural aryl substrates.
