Lill R and Kispal G  (2000) Maturation of cellular Fe-S proteins: an essential function of mitochondria. Trends Biochem Sci 25(8):352-6

Abstract: Iron-sulfur (Fe-S) cluster-containing proteins perform important tasks in catalysis, electron transfer and regulation of gene expression. In eukaryotes, mitochondria are the primary site of cluster formation of most Fe-S proteins. Assembly of the Fe-S clusters is mediated by the iron-sulphate cluster assembly (ISC) machinery consisting of some ten proteins.
