2005-05-18	This gene was originally named RHC18 (Rad Homolog in Cerevisiae), based on the work of Dr. Alan Lehmann (PMID:8524274). The name was changed to SMC6 (Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes) based on a request (April 2005) received from the community. The rationale for the change is based on consistent use of name SMC6 in the literature, the prevailing use of this name for orthologs identified in other eukaryotes, the fact that it is a bona fide member of the SMC protein superfamily, and that it is a subunit of the heterodimeric Smc5p-Smc6p complex.
