SUMMARY PARAGRAPH for SPR3

SPR3 encodes a septin (3). Septins are a family of conserved proteins first identified in yeast and subsequently found in numerous other fungi and animals, including human, mouse, Drosophila, and C. elegans (reviewed in 4 and 5). Four yeast septins, Cdc3p Cdc10p, Cdc11p, and Cdc12p, have been studied extensively; they are required for cytokinesis, axial bud site selection, and the correct localization of several other proteins involved in cytokinesis, morphogenesis, and bud site selection (5, 6).

SPR3 is expressed specifically during meiotic divisions and ascospore formation (7). Deletion of SPR3 causes no apparent defect in mitotically growing cells, but causes a sporulation defect in some strains (3). The septins Spr3p and Spr28p localize to the prospore wall along with Cdc3p and Cdc11p (3, 8).
