BDF1/YLR399C Summary Help

Standard Name BDF1 1
Systematic Name YLR399C
Feature Type ORF, Verified
Description Protein involved in transcription initiation; functions at TATA-containing promoters; associates with the basal transcription factor TFIID; contains two bromodomains; corresponds to the C-terminal region of mammalian TAF1; redundant with Bdf2p; BDF1 has a paralog, BDF2, that arose from the whole genome duplication (2, 3 and see Summary Paragraph)

SUMMARY PARAGRAPH for BDF1

BDF1 was identified in a screen for mutants that affect transcription of a reporter snRNA (1). BDF1 mutants show a reduced rate of vegetative growth, sensitivity to DNA damaging agents, and are unable to undergo the meiotic divisions required for sporulation (4). Bdf1p is found in the nucleus throughout the cell cycle, and is localized uniformly along the length of chromosomes (4). This localization suggests that Bdf1p may be a chromatin component (4). Bdf1p has some regions of similarity to proteins from Drosophila and human (1); Bdf1p also contains two "bromodomains," regions that may be involved in interactions with histones (1).
