SUMMARY PARAGRAPH for YME2

Yme2p is an integral mitochondrial inner-membrane protein (5). Conserved sequence elements in Yme2p suggest that it may function as an exonuclease (4). Some work suggests that Yme2p may play a role in maintaining the mitochondrial genome as well as a central role in controlling the mtDNA escape of some other yme mutants (4).

yme2 nulls exhibit a high rate of mtDNA escape and, depending on strain background, may also experience a respiratory defect due to the loss of mtDNA (5). Mutations in yme2 interact genetically with yme1 resulting in a synthetic respiratory growth defect on ethanol/glycerol media at 30 C (4). However, the gene products of YME1 and YME2 show no physical interactions with each other as assessed by two-hybrid analysis and co-immunoprecipitations (5).
