SUMMARY PARAGRAPH for PET309
PET309 encodes an integral protein of the mitochondrial inner membrane (3) that is required for two steps in the expression of COX1, the mitochondrial gene encoding subunit 1 of cytochrome c oxidase. In strains where the COX1 gene contains introns, transcription or stability of intron-containing COX1 RNA species requires Pet309p (1). Translation of the COX1 mRNA also specifically requires Pet309p (1). The pet309 null mutant displays a respiratory growth defect, and Cox1p is missing from its mitochondrial translation products (1). An apparent ortholog exists in Neurospora crassa, where the CYA-5 protein, which has similarity to Pet309p, is also required for COX1 translation (4).
