HXT12 was identified through the systematic sequencing project as having high similarity to other representatives of the 18-20 member S. cerevisiae hexose transporter family (2, 4, 1, 5) HXT12 is represented in SGD as two separate ORFs, YIL170w and YIL171w, and may be a pseudogene; deletion of two nucleotides from the systematic sequence is required to yield the predicted Hxt12p sequence (2, 4) HXT12, linked to the telomere of chromosome IX-L, is most similar to subtelomeric genes HXT11 (chromosome XV-L; 98% amino acid identity) and HXT9 (chromosome X-L; 97% amino acid identity) (4). The high similarity of HXT12's sequence to other HXT genes suggests that either it is a recently formed pseudogene, or there is an error in the systematic sequence (2, 4, 1). When 18 members of the hexose transporter family were amplified from genomic DNA and overexpressed, HXT12 was the only one unable to transport hexoses, supporting its designation as a pseudogene (1). In common with all the HXT genes, deletions of YIL170w and YIL171w are viable (1).
